Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy Appointments Providing "hands on" therapy since 1998, Commonwealth Orthopaedics Physical Therapy was developed to serve the orthopaedic, work, and athletic needs of our patients.

Commonwealth Physical Therapy's "hands on" approach begins with an extensive evaluation of the patient's problem. Goals of treatment are discussed and agreed upon. An individualized treatment plan is developed to attain these goals and achieve maximum functional capacity. Commonwealth physical therapists pride themselves on their personalized manual therapy techniques.

The clinics are located adjacent to the Commonwealth physician offices which allows immediate communication, consult and follow-up with the patient's physician. All the physical therapists are registered and licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Dry Needling Technique

Dry Needling is an invasive technique used by physical and occupational therapists to treat acute and chronic pain, and rehabilitation from injury with very few side effects. The technique uses a filament needle, without medication or injection, which is inserted into areas of the muscle known as trigger points. A trigger point describes a taut band of skeletal muscle located within a larger muscle group. Trigger points can be tender to the touch and can refer pain to distant parts of the body. Physical and Occupational therapists utilize dry needling with the goal of releasing/inactivating the trigger points and relieving pain. Preliminary research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and facilitates an accelerated return to active rehabilitation.

Dry needling should not be confused with acupuncture. They are two different things. Acupuncture uses points that lie along the body's meridians or energy channels, while myofascial dry needling uses points that are defined by western based anatomy and physiology.

Dry needling is currently available at 4 Commonwealth locations, Fairfax, Reston, Springfield and Tysons. It does require a prescription from a physician.

“I recently completed two months of physical therapy at your Reston facility. The facility is very well run and equipped.  It has a pleasant atmosphere and all the personnel involved are professional and also very nice and welcoming.  My therapist, Allison, is wonderful.  She is totally professional, extremely talented and hard working, and a very, very nice and thoughtful person.  I would not only recommend your facility, I would actively urge friends to consider it.”

“I have just recently finished a session of physical therapy at the Arlington facility.  I feel compelled to let you know how pleased I was with the treatment I received.  Not only am I feeling better physically, but I was very impressed with the staff at the center.  From the welcoming front desk staff to the professional therapist and assistants, I was treated with utmost courtesy and care by all.  You can be very proud of all of the employees, as they should be of themselves.  Thank you for this positive experience.”
