Charles R. Ubelhart, MD

A Kentucky native, Dr. Charles Ubelhart graduated from the University of Notre Dame before returning to his home state to earn a medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington. He remained in Lexington to complete a general surgery internship and residency at University Hospital before moving to Arlington to do an orthopaedic surgery residency at National Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Ubelhart served as a surgeon in the United States Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during the Vietnam conflict. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his outstanding service to our country during that time.

Having built an established medical practice in Alexandria, Dr. Ubelhart also had a dream of growing an outstanding large-group practice and so joined with thirteen other physicians to build Commonwealth Orthopaedics in 1999. Today, with more than thirty years of experience in the Emergency Room setting, Dr. Ubelhart specializes in general orthopaedic surgery, trauma, and adult reconstructive surgery, including total joint replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder. Additionally, having completed a year-long post-residency fellowship program in upper extremity/hand surgery, he is interested in complex upper extremity problems.

As a sports enthusiast and an active participant in the community, Dr. Ubelhart has provided many years of care for area high school, college, and recreational athletes.

Dr. Ubelhart and his wife, Mary Pat, reside in Northern Virginia, where they raised their three children: Rick, Kevin, and Kara. In his leisure time, Dr. Ubelhart enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren, photography, agricultural endeavors, and an occasional round of golf.
