Frank A. Pettrone, MD
With a keen interest in athletic injuries and finding solutions that help athletes
return to optimum performance, Dr. Frank Pettrone was naturally attracted
to a career in orthopaedics. After earning a BA from Brown University and
a medical degree from Georgetown University, Dr. Pettrone completed both
his internship and residency program at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Then, before joining Commonwealth Orthopaedics, he served a tour in the United
States Navy as an orthopaedic surgeon.
Dr. Pettrone practices general orthopaedics and particularly enjoys caring for athletes and following their return to athletic performance. With his special interest in sports medicine, Dr. Pettrone also participates in research of radiofrequency treatment of articular cartilage lesions, extra-corporeal shockwave therapy for tennis elbow, and artificial knee ligaments.
Involved in a variety of professional organizations and activities, Dr. Pettrone finds his contributions to the teaching and training of residents and sports medicine fellows especially rewarding. In addition to teaching, he is involved in caring for multiple sports teams—from high school and local club teams to intercollegiate and professional athletic teams such as George Mason University, the Prince William Pirates, and DC United. He has served as a physician for the US Olympic Training Center Teams and US National Teams including the gymnastic, canoe/kayak, and soccer teams. Dr. Pettrone’s professional honors and awards include the Jack Rockwell Award (the US Gymnastics Outstanding Physician of the Year), the US Military Sports Medicine Fellowship Physician of the Year, and participation in the Clinical Program of Orthopaedics at Georgetown Medical School. Also active in the community, Dr. Pettrone is involved in fundraising for Catholic Charities, alumni giving at Brown University, and participation with the Foundation at George Mason University.
Dr. Pettrone and his wife, Claire, an attorney for the healthcare industry, live in McLean. and have three children. In his leisure time, Dr. Pettrone loves travel, the beach, and playing tennis.
