Matthew J. Levine, MD

Growing up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dr. Matthew Levine developed a personal passion for sports. While earning a BA in architecture at Yale University, he was also an award-winning two-sport athlete in both track and field and diving. Following his undergraduate studies, he competed in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials. Dr. Levine then completed his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania where he also helped coach their championship track teams. During his orthopaedic surgery residency at George Washington University as well as during his fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Duke University, Dr. Levine continued his work with athletes at both the high school and collegiate levels.  While at George Washington he served as an assistant team physician for St. Albans School, and during his fellowship he worked closely with the sports teams at Duke University and North Carolina Central University, including Duke’s nationally-ranked men’s and women’s basketball teams.  Dr. Levine also completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow reconstruction in Sydney, Australia.

With a particular enjoyment for coaching, teaching and working with athletes as they return from injuries, Dr. Levine is well-suited for his work in sports medicine. His special interests include sports-related arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction and all aspects of shoulder surgery, ranging from arthroscopic stabilization and rotator cuff repair to complex reconstruction and replacement.

Dr. Levine is married to Heather Gazan, a lawyer.  In his leisure time, he enjoys running, biking, skiing, and serving as medical staff at events including the annual Penn Relays.
