Charles S. Lefton, MD
Dr. Charles Lefton earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Upon completion of his internship and residency, Dr. Lefton served as an orthopaedic surgeon in the United States Air Force for two years at Kessler Air Force Base Regional Medical Center in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Dr. Lefton has been practicing general orthopaedic surgery in Northern Virginia since 1978. While he considers himself a general orthopaedist and continues to do adult reconstructive surgery including total joint surgery, he still retains a strong interest in pediatric orthopaedics having done a year of specialty training in this area. A natural outgrowth of taking care of young people is his interest in sports related injuries.
For several years, Dr. Lefton served as a consultant to the Pediatric Clinic of the Division of Handicapped Services of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is presently serving as Director of the Orthopaedic Clinic at Virginia Hospital Center which is a teaching clinic for Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. In this role he trains medical students and residents in the treatment of both adult and pediatric patients.
He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC where he is a three-time recipient of the Peter Kenmore Award for Excellence in Resident Education. He recently received the Vicennial Medal for twenty years of distinguished service to the university. In addition, he has a keen interest in hospital affairs and has served many years on the Medical Executive Committee of the Virginia Hospital Center where he also served as Medical Staff President. He continues to be interested in the changing face of medical care delivery and frequently lectures about “Medical Care in the New Millennium.”
Dr. Lefton and his wife, Hannah, both grew up in Detroit, Michigan and have two grown sons. He is an avid scuba diver, as well as an accomplished underwater photographer. He enjoys hiking with his labradoodle, traveling, learning about modern art and especially, being a grandfather.
