Thomas J. Klein, MD
Growing up with a father who worked in structural engineering and taking an early interest in human anatomy, Dr. Thomas Klein knew at the age of 12 that he wanted to pursue a medical career. Originally from Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Dr. Klein earned a BA in biology from Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, before going on to graduate from medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship in Danville, Pennsylvania, and did an orthopaedic surgery residency at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Whether returning injured athletes to full athletic participation, helping children and their parents feel comfortable while treating various pediatric fractures, or helping older adults return to normal lifestyles after joint replacement surgery, Dr. Klein enjoys working with patients of all ages. His particular orthopaedic interests include knee arthroscopy and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. He also enjoys seeing the positive results of using new arthroscopic techniques for shoulder surgery and performing total knee and hip replacements for arthritis patients who are not responding to more conservative treatment.
Dr. Klein is active in medical leadership roles and has served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at Reston Hospital and as Quality Management Chairman of Commonwealth Orthopaedics. He has also enjoyed the honor of being recognized in several issues of the Washingtonian Magazine as one of the top orthopaedic doctors in the region.
In a role that suits his interest in sports medicine, Dr. Klein has had the opportunity to treat some of the area’s most elite athletes over the past twenty years. He also assists in providing orthopaedic coverage for Herndon and Langley High Schools.
Dr. Klein is married with three children. For more than ten years, he has coached youth soccer in his community. In his leisure time, Dr. Klein remains active in sports including adult soccer, mountain biking, running, skiing, tennis, and golf. And when time allows, he also enjoys traveling with his family and dabbling with oil paints.
