Nancy R. Couleman, MD

With an appreciation for all the fields of medicine and a special interest in helping people overcome their fears of surgery, Dr. Nancy Couleman found her niche in the area of anesthesiology. After receiving a BS with highest honors in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, she earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, also in Richmond. Dr. Couleman then remained in Richmond to complete her formal medical education with an internship and residency in anesthesiology at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital.

After practicing anesthesia primarily throughout Virginia and Maryland, Dr. Couleman joined Commonwealth Orthopaedics as a staff anesthesiologist in 2006. A mother of two, she particularly enjoys working with children and helping to ease their fears and place them at ease before surgery.

Dr. Couleman is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Maryland Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Couleman is married to David Kanazawa. Together they have two teenage children—a son and a daughter—along with a dog, three cats, two birds, and a chinchilla. In her leisure time, Dr. Couleman is involved with her children’s academic and athletic activities, playing piano, boating and motorcycling.
