George Aguiar, MD

Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery as having a specialty in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Dr. Aguiar has a special interest in knees and shoulders. He graduated with a BS in Biology from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and then continued his education at the Georgetown University School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree and was named to Alpha Omega Alpha. With a love for the DC area, Dr. Aguiar stayed at Georgetown to complete his surgical internship and orthopaedic residency.

Raised in New York City and fluent in Spanish, Dr. George Aguiar was drawn to the field of orthopaedics out of a desire to help improve and change the lives of patients with acute and chronic injuries. Intrigued by the constant challenge to stay abreast of the latest technologies and procedures within the orthopaedic specialty, Dr. Aguiar enjoys interacting daily with patients and using his surgical skills to improve patient disabilities. Dr. Aguiar has tailored his practice to include primarily sports medicine and adult knee and shoulder reconstruction. With extensive experience in total hip and knee replacements, Dr. Aguiar’s special interests also include arthroscopic rotator cuff and labral repairs, ACL reconstruction with grafts, arthroscopic shoulder instability repair, ankle arthroscopy, and total knee replacements.

As coordinator of the Educational Cadaver Labs for Commonwealth Orthopaedics, Dr. Aguiar is involved in training surgical residents in the latest orthopaedic procedures and instructing residents at Georgetown University. Dr. Aguiar is also active with area hospitals and serves as the Chairman of Orthopedics at Reston Hospital Center. Additionally, he is team physician for Langley High School and regularly devotes time to seeing athletes at school.

Dr. Aguiar is married to a nurse practitioner, and together they have six children.

Patient Testimonials

RateMDs.com:
I have been a patient of Dr. George Aguiar for over four years. He has performed one surgery on me thus far -- a total knee replacement -- and I'll be using him again this Winter for shoulder surgery. Dr. Aguiar is exceedingly kind and empathetic to his patients. He's the type of doctor you wish could do ALL of your surgeries, because he inspires a total sense of security. There is no pretense or sham with this doctor. He truly cares when his patients are in pain, but never rushes to surgery. He always tries other modalities of treatment first. Unfortunately, nothing helped me. Before my TKR, Dr. Aguiar thoroughly explained the procedure and the possible risks. I was fully prepared for the surgery, but didn't have a moment's concern; I had total trust in my surgeon. I had PT at Commonwealth Rehabilitation (next to their offices) and several times, he would stop in, just to see how I was doing. It meant so much to me. That's above and beyond -- but that's Dr. Aguiar.
